Queen Latifah

Dana Elaine Owens is an American singer and rapper better known under her stage name, Queen Latifah. In music, film and television Queen Latifah is the recipient of the award of two Screen Actors Guild Awards (two Image Awards), a Grammy Award, six more Grammy nods and has been nominated for her Emmy Award. Queen Latifah was raised in Newark, New Jersey. She is the daughter of Rita Owens, Sr. and Lancelot Owens Jr. Their divorce occurred in the year Latifah was ten. Latifah was born into the Baptist church and she attended Catholic school in Newark New Jersey. In her early twenties, her cousin gave Latifah the name of a stage Latifah which translates to delicate and kind in Arabic. Latifah, 5-foot-10" tall forward on the team at her high school, was always a tall girl. She performed the song "Home" from The Wiz in a performance in her high school. Latifah became a beatboxer for The Ladies Fresh rap band. Latifah was one of those who were part of the first model of the Flavor Unit which at that the time was comprised of MCs grouped around producer DJ Mark the 45 King. Mark James aka the DJ Mark the 40 King created an audition for the hip-hop Princess of the Posse by Queen Latifah. The song was sent to host Yo! MTV Raps Freddy. Dante Ross of Tommy Boy Music has signed Latifah upon hearing the track. She released her first single, Wrath of My Madness, in 1988.
